Background:
Mac Chimah's journey to becoming a top QB prospect is nothing short of remarkable. Coming out of high school in Washington, DC as a mere one-star recruit, Chimah faced significant obstacles in pursuing his professional football dreams. Rather than letting this deter him, he chose to attend Division II Bowie State University, where he dedicated himself to developing his craft away from the spotlight of major college football. At Bowie State, he put up tremedous numbers, setting school records for Starts, TDs, and Yards in a season. But in the end, he was still a nobody with no where left to go. Until he got an surprising call.
Chimah's breakthrough came through an unexpected connection when one of his former high school coaches, now working as a trainer at WFL Global: DC, recognized his growth and secured him a tryout opportunity. Originally he was only asked to throw for the WRs at the camp but after seeing what he could do, Chimah was running the drills himself. Since that moment, Chimah has captured the attention of scouts and media alike, climbing draft boards through his consistent performance and well-rounded skill set.
Strengths:
Chimah demonstrates exceptional football IQ and processing speed, making quick decisions from the pocket. His mechanics are polished and consistent, showing the results of countless hours of dedicated practice. He displays good accuracy at short and intermediate ranges, placing the ball where only his receivers can make plays. His mobility is above average, allowing him to extend plays when needed without relying too heavily on his legs. Perhaps most impressively, Chimah shows remarkable poise under pressure, likely developed during his years of fighting for recognition.
Weaknesses:
The most notable limitation in Chimah's game is his arm strength, which grades out as average by professional standards. While he can make all the necessary throws, he doesn't possess the kind of cannon that makes scouts drool. Additionally, his Division II background raises legitimate questions about the level of competition he faced, making his learning curve potentially steeper than other prospects.
Draft Stock:
Currently ranked third on Legatron's QB Big Board, Chimah has positioned himself as an intriguing prospect who could potentially start at the next level. However, there remains some skepticism among evaluators about whether his impressive showing in pre-draft workouts will translate to actual game situations against elite competition. Comparing him to other QBs in this class, he is still a safer bet then those who haven't played the position much or haven't had touched a football before tryouts but there is still valid concern that if the league is able to attract more talented players in the future that Chimah may get passed over yet again.
Summary:
Mac Chimah represents both the potential rewards and risks of drafting a small-school prospect. His work ethic and balanced skill set suggest a high floor as a professional quarterback, but questions about competition level and arm strength create uncertainty about his ceiling. His story of perseverance and steady improvement make him an easy player to root for, but teams will need to determine whether his rise up draft boards is more substance than hype.
